Seller Story
Meet Craig Fleishman – A Legacy Rooted in ConservationCraig Fleishman represents the fifth generation of his family to farm the same land in Dallas County, a tradition he has proudly continued full-time since the early 1970s. His farming philosophy is a thoughtful balance of time-honored crop rotation and forward-thinking conservation methods aimed at improving soil health and protecting water quality.
Craig’s three-year rotation includes oats, and he has long practiced no-till farming to reduce inputs and build up organic matter in his soil. One of his signature approaches involves alternating crops in 12-row strips. Over the past four years, Craig has seen a noticeable improvement, with his soil's organic matter increasing by half a percent—a clear sign of the land responding to mindful stewardship.
In his own words, Craig acknowledges the limits of restoring soil to its original prairie state but sees value in every step toward rebuilding healthy soil structure. “Once the effects of tillage are behind you, the soil begins to come back,” he says.
Beyond the field, Craig is also a writer with a passion for storytelling. He’s currently working on a nonfiction book, The Lost Art of Ridge-till, which chronicles his journey in conservation and his role within Iowa Learning Farms' farmer network.
When asked about his motivation, Craig says it simply: “I’ve never been one to preach, but I believe we’re called to treat the soil with respect. That’s my sermon.”
